Soviet Mosaics in Ukraine

Flaming Meteor

From 1982 to 1985, Ernest Kotkov created a three-dimensional composition called "Burning Meteor." It stands 15 meters tall and is made of iron and concrete, adorned with a mosaic made of smalt and marble. The sculpture is located in Dnipro, near the "Meteor" sports complex. Through this artwork, Kotkov aimed to explore form and assert his mastery over the surrounding visual space. Notably, this was the first time Kotkov fully integrated the sculpture with the surrounding space by placing it directly on the asphalt, without a pedestal. The "flaming meteor" appears to connect with the ground, with mosaic lava flowing along its surface.

Kotkov's work was nominated for the State Prize and was included in the "View" exhibition. Today, it stands as a monument of cultural heritage in Dnipro. Unfortunately, the sculpture is currently in poor condition and requires restoration.
