Cinema «Yaroslavna». Putyvl

Decorative panel «Igor's departure to the campaign» on the facade of the cinema «Yaroslavna» in Putivl, Sumy region

The panel is made in sgraffito and mosaic

1966

«The artists worked in a laconic coloring as they based on the images of ancient Russian painting. The panel has a wide-ranging composition: a multi-figure stage of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich's campaign with his wife, against the background of the ancient Putivl, with a view of the fortress and the prince's house in Gorodok. There is Prince Igor in the centre of the panel, who is sitting on a horse in a half-turn position with a weapon in his hand. In such foreshortening, Prince Igor on his horse seems to be hovering in the airspace. This image can be compared with the iconographic story of St. George the Victorious. On the right, next to Prince Igor, on his swift battle-colored horse, his eldest son Vladimir is depicted, holding a gonfalon in his hand. The left side of the panel attracts the viewer's attention to the image of Princess Yaroslavna, hovering lightly, like a bird, over the Putivl fortress against the background of a huge solar disk. The Princess is accompanied by the image of a lone white swan - a lyrical symbol of grief and hope.»
